This webpage provides information to the players, coaches and parents on the CPS Academic Chess Program

 

Academic Chess provides elementary & high school students from diverse communities across the city with an opportunity to participate in vibrant chess programs. The CPS Academic chess students compete throughout the year and participate in the CPS Academic Chess City play-offs, City Championship State and National tournaments. Academic Chess is separated into three categories:

  • Chicago Chess League – Competitive chess tournaments for students participating in after-school chess clubs
  • Cops & Kids – Promoting non-violence and increase positive relationships with youth and police officers
  • First Moves – In the classroom program for 2nd and 3rd grade students

    CHAMPIONSHIP SECTIONS: 4-SS, G/40,d5 Rounds: 10:00, 12:00, 2:00 & 4:00.

    RESERVE & NOVICE SECTIONS: 5-SS, G/25,d5 Rounds: 10:00, 12:00, 1:30, 3:00 & 4:30.

    AWARDS CEREMONY: 6:00 pm.

    ENTRY FEE: $40 by 1/15; $50 by 1/29; $60 after 1/29. On-site entry receives ½ point 1st round bye. $5 off to siblings & team members when registering together.

    PRIMARY (K-3): Championship: open to all. Trophies: top 8 players, top rated Under 800, top 3 schools. Reserve U600: open to players rated Under 600. Trophies: top 8 players, top 3 schools. Novice U200: open to players rated Under 200 / Unrated. Trophies: top 12 players, top 3 schools.

    ELEMENTARY (K-6): Championship: open to all. Trophies: top 10 players, top rated Under 1000, top 3 schools. Reserve U800: open to players rated Under 800. Trophies: top 10 players, top 3 schools. Novice U300: open to players rated Under 300 / Unrated. Trophies: top 12 players, top 3 schools.

    JUNIOR HIGH (K-9): Championship: open to all. Trophies: top 5 players, top rated Under 1200, top 2 school. Reserve U1000: open to players rated Under 1000. Trophies: top 5 players, top 2 schools. Novice U400: open to players rated Under 400 / Unrated. Trophies: top 8 players, top 2 schools.

    HIGH SCHOOL (K-12): Championship: open to all. Trophies: top 5 players, top rated Under 1400, top 2 school. Reserve U1200: open to players rated Under 1200. Trophies: top 5 players, top 2 schools. Novice U500: open to players rated Under 500 / Unrated. Trophies: top 8 players, top 2 schools.

    Any player who scores 4 or more points and doesn’t win a trophy will receive a medal!

    FOOD: Concession food sales by Savor.

    PARKING: Lot A – 2301 South Prairie Avenue, Chicago, IL 60616: (8′ height clearance) is a six level garage with 2,100 parking spaces located on Martin Luther King Drive, adjacent to the West Building. As of 5/1/17 the parking rate was $23 for up to 16 hours and $36 from 16 to 24 hours.* There are no in-and-out privileges.

    The City of Chicago will recognize the top individual & team from Chicago in each Championship Section as the City Champion
