“It is impossible to ignore a highly important factor of the chess struggle – psychology.”
-Yuri Averbakh (Russian Grandmaster)
On Saturday, November 7, 2015, the psychological struggle was real for both elementary aged children and 14th District Police Officers who took part in the Cops & Kids Chess Tournament.
During the 2nd round Victor, a 4th grader from Chicago Grammar School, faced off against Officer Filipe Reyes in a game of chess.
There questions here is – who was the underdog?
Nearly 50 children from across Chicago and suburbs came to the tournament to show creativity and fighting spirits through the game of chess. Almost 10 Police Officers from the 14th District volunteered their time to compete in this tournament, including the commander.
When all 4 rounds were completed, only a few stood undefeated. In the K-4 section, both with 4 points each, Micah Askew won 1st place (on tie breaks) and Justin Chen won second place. In the K-4 team section, with 9 points finishing in 1st place was the Skinner West Elementary School.
In the 5-9 section, IIIia Svirinovskyi finished in 1st place with 4 points followed by Elizabeth Codamon in 2nd with 3 points (won on tie breaks). In the 5-9 team section, Kinzie Elementary School finished with 9 points finishing in 1st place.
