On Saturday, February 6, 305 students in grades K-12 from across the country participated in this year’s Greater Chicago Scholastic Championship. Unlike prior years where the students competed in person, this year’s event was held online on the ChessKid platform. This allow students to participate from the comfort and safety of the home.
A special thanks goes out to SBB Research Group that sponsored this event for the 7th year in a row.

Since the shut down of schools in March 2020, we have successfully transitioned the Chicago Public Schools Academic chess programs online.

Congratulations to all the students that played in this years’ 2020 Chicago Public Schools K-8 Chess Championship online. 127 students from 19 school battled it out over the virtual chess board in two section for 5 rounds. At the end of the day Chris Sakaliyski, a 4th grader from Edison, was the clear winner of the K-4 Section and Leon Cao, a 8th graded from Whitney Young and Rhett Severns, a 7th grader from Lane Tech, were the co-champions of the 5-8grade section.
Out of concern for the health and safety of the players, parents, coaches and staff with the potential spread of COVID-19, the Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation, the International Chess School and the FIDE America regretfully announce the postponement of the 2020 North American Youth Chess Championship. Due to the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic we felt that we could not ensure they safety of the event at this time.
As the tournament was scheduled to be held in Chicago, we know that the tournament would have been the highlight of the year for many of the players. The event will be postponed to 2021 with the dates not yet determined.
Renaissance Knights will be providing full entry fee refunds to players that have already registered for the event. They will be processed automatically within a week; there is no need to contact us about this. Any questions should be directed to David Heiser at david.heiser@renaissanceknights.org.
It is not necessary to contact the Hilton Chicago to cancel your reservation as the hotel will be cancelling all reservations made for the event. The hotel will be sending out individual confirmation via email of each cancellation.
The Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation, the International Chess School and the FIDE America will continue to work hard to bring you top level scholastic tournaments.

SBB Research Group‘s sponsorship enables all participating CPS students to receive one-year USCF memberships as well as free tournament entries.
Out of concern for the health and safety of the players, parents, coaches and staff with the potential spread of COVID-19, the Kasparov Chess Foundation, Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation and the US Chess Federation regretfully announce the cancellation of the 17th annual KCF All-Girls National Championships (AGN) due to the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker announced on March 16 that he was ordering gatherings of 50 or more people to be canceled in line with new CDC guidelines issued Sunday.
As the largest female chess tournament in the United States, we know that the tournament is the highlight of the year for many of the players. This is the first time in the events 17-year history that it has been canceled. The event will not be rescheduled. The next AGN will be place from April 23- 25, 2021 at the Hyatt McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois.
Renaissance Knights will be providing full entry fee refunds to players that have already registered for the event. They will be processed automatically over the next few weeks; there is no need to contact us about this. We will also be refunding any team rooms that have been paid for. Our goal is to have all refunds processed in the next several weeks. Any questions should be directed to David Heiser at david.heiser@renaissanceknights.org.
